In a confusing development on Wednesday night, the website domain name of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBANK) became inaccessible in what Nigerians believed to be a suspected move to hack the bank’s website.

Complaints from customers on social media, Wednesday night, showed that the GTBank website, gtbank.com, was no longer accessible with suspicions of a hack attack.

See some complaints gathered by GWG.ng from netizens on the suspected hack of the GTbank website:

Olajumoke Peperenpe said, “Gtb is forcing their shares down our throats, meanwhile we can’t make transfers or do anything on the app.”

Oludayo Sokunbi (Deewon) questioned, “Dear GTB @gtbank, What is always wrong with you people? Why is your App doing nonsense since morning?

Michael @Michael_mickyt1 said, “I get #700 for my GTB, make the hacking no affect that money o .I will display craze for their branch.”

@mimmie marie2 said, “Just read that GTB platform has been compromised by hackers. Move your funds please!!!!”

GWG.ng learnt that the issue of the suspected hack arose just a day after the GTbank domain was renewed for another five years, extending its validity from August 13, 2024, through March 21, 2029, according to several online platforms that track domain information.

However, no hacker group has claimed responsibility for the alleged hack on the website.

According to People’s Gazette, the alleged attackers may have set up a fraudulent version of the website in an attempt to phish for customers’ sensitive information.

A cybersecurity expert familiar with Nigeria’s banking sector indicated that the compromise could have involved the bank’s login credentials, rather than the domain being hijacked for resale.

Despite the disruption to the website, the bank’s mobile applications on Android and iOS remained functional as of Wednesday night.

Amid the chaos, in the early hours of  Thursday morning, Daily Post said a top GTB executive, who is not authorized to speak publicly, disclosed exclusively that the reports making the rounds over the bank’s website being hacked is false.

GTBank, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, serves millions of customers across Nigeria and other African countries.
