The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested several high-profile individuals, including Garba Musa Kwankwaso, a nephew of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate.

The arrests of Kwankwaso and others by the anti-corruption commission are connected to an alleged multi-billion Naira drug supply fraud affecting the 44 local government areas of Kano State.

Among those detained were Alhaji Mohammed Kabawa, the Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Abdullahi Bashir, the Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and Chairman of Tauroni Local Government Area. The arrests follow the earlier detention of Kabawa for his suspected involvement in the scam.

The commission’s preliminary investigation suggests that the suspects colluded to award a contract to Novomed Pharmaceuticals for the supply of drugs to 38 local government areas, in violation of public procurement laws. Each of the 38 local governments reportedly paid N9.1 million to Novomed for the drugs, which were never delivered.

Garba Musa Kwankwaso, who also serves as Managing Director of Novomed Pharmaceuticals, is alleged to be a central figure in the scheme that was unveiled by the Kano anti-corruption agency. The commission has confirmed that all suspects are cooperating with the investigation.

Kabiru I. Kabiru, the commission’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrests and stated that the investigation is ongoing. He emphasized the commission’s commitment to uncovering the full scope of the fraud and ensuring that those responsible face justice. As of the latest update, the suspects remain in the commission’s custody.
