The Super Falcons of Nigeria have announced that head coach Randy Waldrum has resigned to focus on his wife, who is battling a serious illness.

Waldrum had been the head coach since 2020, leading the team to a semi-final finish at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

He also guided the Super Falcons to the round of 16 at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where they conceded only two goals, the fewest in the team’s World Cup history.

Additionally, Waldrum helped the team qualify for the 2024 Olympics for the first time in 16 years.

Despite high expectations, the Super Falcons did not advance beyond the group stage at the Olympics, losing to Japan, Spain, and Brazil. Waldrum attributed the team’s struggles to inadequate preparation but was still expected to continue as coach.

In his resignation letter dated September 12, 2024, Waldrum stated, “It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons. This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.”
