Borno Govt Criticized For Evicting Flood Victims From IDP Camp (Video)

The Borno State government has come under fire for allegedly providing inadequate support to victims of the recent floods in Maiduguri, which left many homeless.

Social media activist, Verydarkman, sparked outrage after sharing a video where he claimed the government gave each flood victim ₦10,000 and a packet of spaghetti before evicting them from the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, even though many of their homes were still submerged.

In the video posted on his social media page, Verydarkman alleged that despite nearly ₦20 billion in donations from well-meaning Nigerians, including ₦1 billion from billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote and 50 trucks of rice from Vice President Kashim Shettima, the victims received minimal aid and were asked to leave the camp.

According to Verydarkman, he had planned to provide boreholes for the victims, but when he contacted one of the affected individuals, he learned that the government had already expelled them from the camp after giving them the meager assistance.

GWg.ng reports that the activist already visited the site where he donated 13 bags of rice in a personal effort to help the victims. In his latest video, Verydarkman showed footage of the now-deserted IDP camp, where several individuals were seen sleeping outside at night, unable to return to their flooded homes.

Borno State has been in the news recently due to the severe flooding that has ravaged several areas, leading to a significant humanitarian response. However, the government’s handling of the relief efforts has been met with growing criticism from citizens and activists alike, who argue that the victims deserve better treatment and more substantial aid during this trying time.
