Akpabio Edo Governorship Tinubu

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stated that the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Edo State governorship election reflects the trust Nigerians have in President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Akpabio made this remark after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo of the APC as the winner of the election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Okpebholo won in 11 local government areas, while Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory in 7 areas. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) did not win in any local government area.

“I strongly believe that the election in Edo, though tense at the beginning, is a reflection of the confidence that Nigerians continue to express in President Tinubu,” Akpabio stated.

The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, announced that Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who received 247,274 votes, and Akpata, who obtained 18,737 votes.

GWG.ng reports that the assertion by Senator Akpabio that the victory of Okpebholo in the Edo governorship election translated to the popularity of President Tinubu discounts the local factors that determined the votes and also the issues of irregularities raised by the PDP.
