Court Grants Bail To Whistleblower, PIDOMNigeria
By Benjamin Abioye
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to journalist and whistleblower Isaac Bristol, who was identified by the Nigerian police as the person behind the PIDOMNigeria account on X.
Bristol is facing charges of money laundering, unlawfully obtaining and sharing classified official documents, and cybercrime.
His arrest and arraignment by the Nigerian police stirred various reactions from netizens who demanded his release.
On Friday, Justice Emeka Nwite granted the controversial journalist bail of ₦5 million, requiring one surety of the same amount.
Justice Nwite made this ruling in response to a motion on notice submitted by Deji Adeyanju, who led Bristol’s legal team. The motion on notice was a formal request to the court to take specific action.
In this case, Adeyanju’s team filed the motion, and Justice Nwite delivered a ruling, which was a judicial decision made by a judge after considering the arguments and evidence presented.
Nwite also ruled that the defendant, that is PIDOMNigeria must deposit his passport with the court to perfect his bail.
Part of the bail conditions included that the surety had to live in Abuja and provide an affidavit of means. The surety also needed to show evidence of three years of tax clearance along with two passport photographs.
