The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the suspension of its senior officers implicated in the ongoing ₦15 million bribery scandal.

This follows an earlier directive from the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), which announced the suspension of four officers linked to various corruption-related cases.

A video circulated online showing one of the suspended senior officers, while standing before the house of representatives committee during the hearing of allegations leveled against Bobrisky and EFCC, claiming he had not yet received an official suspension letter. In response, a statement issued by Assistant Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, condemned the denial as a gross misconduct intended to mislead the public.

“For clarity, the Nigerian Correctional Service suspended not only the officer in the video, but also three other officers for their alleged involvement in misconduct, to allow for proper investigation,” the statement read.

The suspended officers include:

  • Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Sikiru Adekunle, Officer-in-Charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos;
  • DCC Michael Anugwa, Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos;
  • DCC Kevin Ikechukwu Iloafonsi, Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, FCT;
  • Assistant Superintendent of Corrections (ASC II) Ogbule Samuel Obinna, from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abakiliki, Ebonyi state.

The statement also confirmed that two official letters, dated September 26, 2024, were issued by the CDCFIB to suspend the officers. The suspension took effect immediately.

The NCoS reassured the public that thorough investigations would be conducted, and anyone found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with Public Service Rules and other laws.
