The Kebbi State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the College of Health Technology in Jega after a violent protest by students.

Reports indicate that students angrily stormed the Provost’s residence, damaging his car in the process.

The protest was triggered by accusations that the college administration forced students to pay ₦23 million for index registration for 250 graduating students.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the dispute began with the introduction of a new Public Health program, initially tied to the Reproductive Health and Public Health Association of Nigeria.

The source, who spoke anonymously, explained that the college merged this new program with the Department of Environmental Health to obtain accreditation. This move led to an additional fee of ₦65,000 being demanded from each student for index registration, on top of the ₦30,000 they had already paid.

Students, accusing the administration of extortion, responded by damaging vehicles and setting fire to the Provost’s home. College staff were forced to flee in fear before the police arrived to control the situation.

In response to the unrest, Isah Abubakar Tunga, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, announced on Thursday that the college would be closed immediately to prevent the situation from worsening. He also mentioned that a committee would investigate the incident, and those found responsible for the violence would face appropriate consequences.

The closure of the college is expected to last for three weeks to a month, as the investigation continues.
