Nigerian-born British politician Kemi Badenoch has been elected the leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom.

Badenoch, who represents North West Essex in the British parliament, contested the leadership on Thursday, October 31.

After the votes were counted, Badenoch released a statement expressing gratitude to her supporters and those who backed her “Renewal2030” campaign, which aims to bring the Conservative Party back to power at 10 Downing Street following a historic defeat by Keir Starmer’s Labour Party.

In her statement, Badenoch said, “Polls have closed for the Conservative Party leadership contest. I want to thank all our party members who have taken the time to listen to pitches from all of the candidates, turned up to our hustings and hosted us in your associations and in your homes.”

She continued, “The Conservative Party is much more to me than a membership organization. It is a family. Thank you to all who voted, especially those who supported me.”

Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also reacted to Badenoch’s victory. He praised her leadership qualities, noting that she served in his government and has proven herself capable of revitalizing the party. Sunak expressed confidence in her ability to strengthen Conservative values and to challenge Labour effectively.

“Congratulations to Kemi Badenoch on being elected Conservative Party leader,” Sunak wrote on his X handle. “I know that she will be a superb leader of our great party. She will renew our party, stand up for Conservative values, and take the fight to Labour. Let’s unite behind her.”

Badenoch’s leadership marks a significant moment for the Conservative Party as she sets her sights on rebuilding support and preparing for future political challenges.
