Deji Adeyanju on 2023 Presidential Candidates

Nigerian activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has expressed concerns about the similarities between three prominent political figures, President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Governor Peter Obi, as he reflects on the 2023 general elections.

In an interview, Adeyanju stated that if he had to choose between the three presidential candidates, he would vote for Peter Obi over Tinubu and Atiku. However, he made it clear that he would not vote for Obi if Omoyele Sowore, the candidate from the African Action Congress (AAC), was included on the ballot.

Adeyanju pointed out that all three candidates – Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi – supported capitalist policies, including advocating for the removal of fuel subsidies. He explained that, in his view, there was little ideological difference between them, stating, “They all campaigned for capitalism, advocating fuel subsidy removal. Why can’t they remove subsidies for politicians and the rich instead?” He went on to criticize the huge subsidies given to wealthy individuals, such as businessman Dangote, and politicians, including those in the National Assembly.

He also raised questions about the extravagant spending by the government, saying, “Do you know how much we subsidize for Dangote? Nigeria practically subsidizes Dangote. He thrives off Nigeria’s resources. Do you know how much we subsidize for Akpabio and others in the National Assembly?”

Adeyanju also referred to the president’s purchase of a new jet. “Why should the poverty capital of the world buy new jets for unproductive politicians?” he asked.

When asked if Nigeria needs a new generation of politicians for the 2027 elections, Adeyanju responded, “I would go for a new breed because these are birds of a feather. They have been doing the same things repeatedly.” He pointed out that while all the main candidates had supported fuel subsidy removal, only Sowore had a different position. He also urged Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso to unite, as division among them only weakens their cause. “They only united after they lost,” he said, referring to their joint press conference protesting the election result.

In response to questions about his views on Peter Obi, Adeyanju emphasized that his criticism was not based on hatred. He explained, “I don’t hate any of these politicians; I just criticize them.” He noted that many Nigerians have a tendency to treat their political leaders as “demi-gods” and are not open to criticism. “Why should we see criticism as hatred?” he asked, adding that, in his view, none of the major political figures were significantly different from one another.
