Messi’s Former Teammate Mascherano Becomes Inter Miami Coach
Mascherano, who shared many successful moments with Lionel Messi at both club and international levels, is set to take on his first role as a head coach with Inter Miami
Former FC Barcelona and Argentina national team player Javier Mascherano is set to become the new head coach of Inter Miami.
This decision comes after Gerardo “Tata” Martino resigned following Inter Miami’s unexpected elimination from the MLS playoffs. The team was defeated by Atlanta United in the quarterfinals on November 9, 2024.
Mascherano, who shared many successful moments with Lionel Messi at both club and international levels, will step into his first role as a head coach in a top-tier league.
His coaching experience includes managing Argentina’s U-20 team, where he won the L’Alcudia trophy, and leading the U-23 squad during the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Despite some challenges, such as early exits from the Olympics and the youth World Cup, his extensive playing career and leadership abilities are highly regarded.
According to Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Mascherano has signed a long-term contract with Inter Miami. This appointment makes him the third Argentine to coach the team, following Javier Morales and Martino. The club is currently finalizing the necessary documents to complete his hiring.
Inter Miami is looking ahead to the 2025 season with hopes of building on its past achievements. Under Martino’s leadership, the team won the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield and set a record with 74 points in a single season.
