Nigerian Olympic bronze medalist, Ese Brume, has shared details of her terrifying car accident in the United States, which she narrowly survived. Brume, who won a long jump bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, said that the crash left her car completely destroyed.

According to Brume, she was traveling with a British friend when their car became stranded on the freeway. While they were calling for help, an SUV rear-ended their vehicle, causing a severe wreck. Brume was seated in the passenger seat at the time of the accident. She sustained a sprained ankle and neck strain, while her friend suffered a brain concussion and shoulder injuries.

“I thank God for sparing our lives, but I am yet to fully overcome the shock,” Brume stated, describing the incident as a “horrible shock.” Despite her injuries, she expressed optimism about her recovery and return to competition. Brume is currently undergoing therapy for her ankle injury and is eager to return to training once cleared by her doctors, with plans to compete in the 2025 World Championships.

Brume’s mother, Mrs. Adaka Sally, a former athlete, praised God for her daughter’s survival, saying, “I was so scared when I saw the pictures of the wreckage of the car, but I thank God for His divine protection upon Ese and her friend.”

In light of the accident, the National Sports Commission (NSC) of Nigeria recently activated its Adopt-an-Athlete Training Grant initiative, with Brume being its first recipient. This initiative aims to provide financial support for Nigerian athletes’ training and development. Brume expressed her gratitude for the initiative, requesting assistance for the purchase of a small vehicle to aid her training.

The NSC plans to distribute similar grants to over 100 other athletes both in Nigeria and abroad, with a total of $30,000 allocated for training support. The initiative underscores the NSC’s commitment to improving athlete welfare and creating a sustainable sports economy in Nigeria.
