A photographer’s ordeal in Lagos has sparked public outrage and led to sanctions against a senior police officer, following allegations of extortion and retaliation.

The incident began when the photographer was arrested for taking pictures near a train in Lagos. The arresting police officers demanded ₦250,000 for his release but eventually settled for ₦30,000, which the victim paid. Upon his release, he reached out to Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) to expose the extortion.

FIJ escalated the case to police authorities in Abuja, who directed the victim to return to the station for a refund. However, upon his arrival, officers at the station re-arrested him, apparently as retaliation for reporting the case.

The development caught the attention of FIJ journalist Ojukwu Justin Daniel, who reported the matter to the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) and the Police Complaint Response Unit (PCRU). Under mounting pressure, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of the station denied any involvement, claiming she released the photographer out of compassion, not because of the bribe.

However, evidence from the victim and FIJ contradicted her claims. The bribe was reportedly paid to a station official through a point-of-sale (POS) agent, who has since disappeared. FIJ revealed that the ACP, who is nearing retirement, pleaded for forgiveness, asking to retire peacefully after years of service.

Her pleas fell on deaf ears, as the FPRO confirmed that disciplinary measures had been taken against her directly from Police Headquarters. Meanwhile, FIJ has vowed to ensure her retirement is marked by accountability, insisting that justice must be served.
