Ijaw youths blackmail Tompolo Kyari Utuaro

The Ijaw Youths Network (IYN) has raised alarm over an escalating international blackmail campaign targeting key figures fighting oil theft in Nigeria.

According to the IYN, the blackmail is being orchestrated by a powerful group of oil thieves, who are uncomfortable with the successes of the campaign led by Tantita Security Services, under the leadership of High Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), and supported by the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Mele Kyari, and Dr. Dennis Otuaro, Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).

In a statement issued on Sunday, IYN President Frank Ebikabo and Secretary Federal Ebiaridor condemned the attempts to discredit these individuals through false and criminal allegations. The IYN leadership’s concerns were triggered by a video of a protest, allegedly funded by the oil thieves, in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York. The protest involved a rogue group making unfounded accusations against Tompolo, Kyari, and Otuaro.

Ebikabo and Ebiaridor called on the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and other national security bodies to investigate the individuals behind the blackmail and ensure they face justice. They also urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to remain committed to the ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and protect the nation’s interests.

The IYN believes that the oil thieves, armed with vast illicit resources, are behind this smear campaign against Tompolo, Kyari, and Otuaro. The group stresses that these powerful criminals, with international connections, are using their wealth and influence to undermine Nigeria’s leadership and destabilize the national economy.

“We are shocked at the extent to which this deadly cabal of oil thieves can go to orchestrate a campaign of calumny against hardworking people carrying out their lawful responsibilities in the Niger Delta,” the IYN leaders said in their statement. “Of course, nobody expects a group of extremely wealthy, connected, and influential people who have been involved in oil theft, stealing billions for years, to go away without resistance.”

The IYN also highlighted the success of the Tinubu administration in boosting Nigeria’s oil production to 1.8 million barrels per day, a key victory in the battle against oil theft. The group emphasized that these achievements must be protected from the destructive forces behind the attacks on Tompolo, Kyari, and Otuaro.

Ebikabo and Ebiaridor also pointed out that some individuals behind the smear campaign may have been frustrated in their ambition to head the Presidential Amnesty Programme. They speculated that Dr. Otuaro’s ongoing efforts for peace in the Niger Delta could be another factor fueling the attack against him.

The IYN has called on other Niger Delta organizations to rally behind the fight against oil theft and support the efforts of Tantita Security Services, the NNPCL, and the PAP leadership. The IYN’s statement concluded with a clear message to the government: “We call on the President to be firm in sustaining what is good for Nigeria. Tompolo and Tantita have shown that it is not impossible to stop the menace of oil theft, as shown by the daily production of oil at 1.8 million barrels per day.”

“We also urge Mr. Kyari and Dr. Otuaro to be firm in carrying out their official responsibilities to this great country. That oil thieves are focusing attacks on them shows in clear terms that their actions are suffocating their evil activities in the region,” the IYN added.
