CHAN Eagles Coach Speaks Ahead Of Do-Or-Die Ghana Cracker
The interim head coach of the home-based Super Eagles, Daniel Ogunmodede, is determined to lead Nigeria to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The team will face Ghana’s Black Galaxies at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, December 28, in a crucial match to secure a spot in the tournament.
The CHAN competition will be held in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda from February 1 to 28, 2025. Currently, Nigeria and Ghana are fighting for one of the final spots. The first leg ended in a goalless draw in Accra, setting up a tense return leg in Uyo.
Ogunmodede and his team have been preparing intensively for the match. The coach emphasized the need for focus and determination in the lead-up to the game. “We are fully dedicated to staying centred and avoiding distractions,” he said. “While we achieved a scoreless draw in the first leg, we must approach this home game with determination. We aimed to secure an away goal, which we didn’t achieve, but now we are ready to give our all on Saturday.”
The Super Eagles plan to adopt a more aggressive approach compared to their defensive strategy in the first leg. The rivalry with Ghana, their missed opportunity at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, and their historical matchups in CHAN all add to the pressure and excitement surrounding the game.
Despite Ghana’s recent challenges in the AFCON qualifiers, the Black Galaxies are expected to put up a strong fight. Historically, Ghana has had the edge over Nigeria in their CHAN encounters. The Super Eagles have won only one of their six previous meetings, with Ghana winning several, including a 3-2 victory in Accra in 2008 and a 2-0 win in 2022.
For the final 2024 CHAN games in Nigeria between the Eagles and Ghana, the Confederation of African Football has appointed Moroccan referee Hamza El Fariq to officiate. His assistants will include Abdessamad Abertoune, Zakaria Bouchtaoui, and Hicham Temsamani, with Prince Kai Saquee from Sierra Leone acting as the match commissioner and Miboti Moise from the Democratic Republic of Congo serving as the referee assessor.
