Family Feud Turns Fatal: Man Arraigned For Mother’s Death
By Benjamin Abioye
A 52-year-old man from Ekiti, Ademilua Oni, has been remanded in prison custody following his arraignment for allegedly killing his 92-year-old mother, Florence Oni.
The tragic incident occurred after a confrontation between the two over an accusation of theft.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, informed the court that the defendant, Ademilua Oni committed the offense on December 15 in Iropora-Ekiti, located in the Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State. According to Adejare, Florence challenged her son for stealing, which led to a heated exchange. In the course of the altercation, Ademilua allegedly pushed his mother, causing her to fall. She reportedly succumbed to injuries from the fall.
The charge brought against Ademilua is in violation of Section 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021. Inspector Adejare requested that the court remand the defendant in a correctional facility while awaiting legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Chief Magistrate Kehinde Awosika presided over the case. Although Ademilua Oni’s plea was not taken, the magistrate ordered his detention at the Ado Ekiti correctional center. The court also scheduled the next hearing for January 30, 2025, for further mention.
This tragic case has sparked discussions about familial conflict and its devastating consequences, highlighting the need for interventions to prevent such incidents.
