Man Wins £5,000 For Cutting Himself During Shaving
By Gideon Ayeni
A London man, Nick Silverthorn, has been awarded £5,000 in compensation from razor manufacturer Wilkinson Sword after suffering severe cuts while shaving with one of their products.
The 48-year-old landscape gardener recounted purchasing a £2.50 Wilkinson Sword Men Advance 3 razor from a Sainsbury’s store in Richmond during the Christmas holidays of 2023. However, what was meant to be a routine shave on Boxing Day turned into a harrowing experience.
“I turned on the hot tap, applied my shaving lotion, and started shaving on autopilot,” he recalled. “After the first few strokes, I felt sharp pain and noticed I was bleeding heavily on both sides of my face. Before I knew it, blood was streaming down.”
Mr. Silverthorn, a man with three decades of shaving experience, immediately sensed this was no ordinary nick. Upon closer inspection, he discovered one of the razor’s blades had detached, leading to the deep cuts. The injuries took weeks to heal and left visible scars.
Haunted by nightmares of blood and revisiting traumatic memories of past medical experiences, he decided to take legal action. Armed with photos of his injuries, the razor, its box, and the receipt, he contacted Express Solicitors, who pursued his case against Wilkinson Sword.
After investigations, the company offered a £5,000 settlement without admitting liability. Mr. Silverthorn accepted but emphasized his fight was driven by principle.
“This wasn’t just a shaving cut — it was a serious fault that could have endangered others,” he said. “I took on the big boys to protect consumers, and I’m glad I did.”
