Pinnick Backs Chelle Super Eagles Role
By Benjamin Abioye
Amaju Pinnick, former president of the Nigeria Football Federation and current FIFA council member, has voiced support for Eric Chelle’s appointment as head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
The announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sparked significant criticism from various quarters since it was made public.
Addressing the backlash, Pinnick expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to lead the team successfully. “I received numerous calls expressing skepticism about his appointment. I found myself shaking my head because, before this announcement, I had conducted thorough research and due diligence regarding Eric. It became evident to me that many critics were unfamiliar with his background and credentials,” Pinnick stated.
He also addressed the racial undertones in some of the criticism, saying, “Many are making judgments based solely on the color of his skin. They seem to overlook the substance of his achievements and the objectives he aims to fulfill.”
Eric Chelle, aged 47, is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Sunday to finalize his contract with the NFF. His appointment marks a significant step for Nigerian football during a time of increased scrutiny and expectations for the Super Eagles’ future.
