During questioning, Ganiyu denied intentionally harming Esther. He explained that the fire started accidentally while he was trying to light a cigarette. According to him, fuel from a bottle he carried had dripped onto her clothes during a struggle over alcohol.
“I didn’t pour petrol on her deliberately,” Ganiyu said. “Esther is my love. I didn’t know the fuel had soaked her dress. I just wanted to stop her from drinking alcohol.”
Ganiyu shared that he had been concerned about Esther’s drinking habits, which had been a source of tension in their relationship. He recounted how he had bought her gifts earlier that day and was disappointed to find her drinking at a bar when she was supposed to be at church.
Meanwhile, Esther remains in critical condition at the National Hospital, Abuja with her family struggling to cover medical expenses. Her uncle, Mr. Modaki Kofur, revealed that Esther had suffered a leg deformity from a previous injury and had been trying to turn her life around.
