A dramatic scene unfolded in Sango, Ibadan, as a vehicle caught fire while road safety officers stood by without offering assistance, sparking widespread outrage on social media.

In a video that has since gone viral, flames consumed the vehicle as bystanders made frantic but unsuccessful efforts to extinguish the fire. The road safety officers were visibly present near the burning car but made no attempt to intervene or provide aid, prompting criticism from netizens.

Social media users quickly took to the comment sections of various platforms to express their disappointment. Some accused the Road Safety officers of negligence, questioning their preparedness and speculating that they might not even have had a fire extinguisher on hand. Others pointed fingers at the vehicle owner, asserting that the lack of a personal fire extinguisher was a violation of basic safety measures.

Amid the backlash, opinions diverged over the role of road safety officers in such emergencies. While some argued that fire safety is outside their primary mandate, others maintained that human lives and property should take precedence, regardless of official duties.

Read some netizens’ reactions below;

@princearinze: And they always quick to fine drivers for not having it. Imagine that. Naija….. 😂

@flourish007: Road safety officers are NOT firefighters; different agencies have specific roles. This is why drivers are required to have fire extinguishers in their taxis—it’s for their own safety. Unfortunately, many of them don’t even have insurance.

@IkeGod: It’s not the job of the driver to have a fire extinguisher. Rather, being a public road, it’s the job the Nigerian State (Federal, State, and Local Government authorities) to have functional fire departments to contain situations like this.

@ajebomezie: And then tomorrow they will arrest someone with the extinguisher

@youngpac: @FRSCNigeria just imagine this disgraceful thing, standing by & claiming to control Traffic. Order your men to stop unnecessary stops and check &asking stvpid questions like didn’t they trained?? They should not hammered drivers on things they know,the dnt have.
