Aiyedatiwa on PDP's election withdrawal

The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for withdrawing from the state’s local government elections, calling it an act of cowardice.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday after voting at Polling Unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, Aiyedatiwa suggested that the PDP’s pullout from the election may have been motivated by a fear of losing.

He said, “For PDP to pull out, that is cowardice. They participated in the whole process. ODIEC released the timetable for the election on time, and I don’t know the reason for that (withdrawal). Maybe the fear of losing. Every election has its own logistics, and other political parties are participating. So, whatever reason that made them withdraw, I am not privy to that.”

The governor also emphasized the importance of the local government election, stating that it is essential for improving grassroots governance and development. He reassured the public of his administration’s dedication to maintaining the effective operation of local government in line with the law. “The local government is crucial to grassroots development. This election is a clear indication of our commitment to enhancing this level of governance,” he remarked.

Aiyedatiwa praised the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) for ensuring a smooth election process irrespective of the PDP pull out.

“I just cast my vote without any crisis. This is just what happened during the November 16 governorship election, which was adjudged to be free and fair. The materials arrived early, the security is in place, and the citizens are here participating. At the end of the day, just as we had in the last election, we don’t expect anything less,” he added.
