The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced key dates for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections and the Anambra State governorship election in 2025.

Voters in the 68 constituencies will elect six Area Council Chairmen and 62 Councillors as the current officials’ tenure ends next year.
Yakubu stated: “Voting will take place in all the designated Polling Units across the 68 constituencies to elect the six Area Council Chairmen and 62 Councillors.”
He also outlined the timeline for electoral activities:

– Party primaries: June 9–30, 2025
– Candidate nomination portal: Opens July 21, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., and closes August 11, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.

– Campaigns: Start on September 24, 2025, and end at midnight on February 19, 2026
Yakubu added that detailed schedules and guidelines would be uploaded to INEC’s website, and political parties were provided with hard copies during the meeting.
The INEC Chairman also mentioned that plans would soon be announced for the resumption of nationwide continuous voter registration and the conduct of pending bye-elections.
For the Anambra governorship election, slated for November 8, 2025, Yakubu reminded political parties to prepare for primaries between March 20 and April 10, 2025. He urged parties to submit their schedules for primaries and campaigns promptly to ensure effective planning and avoid last-minute challenges.
“So far, only a few parties are in compliance. I urge those that have not done so to submit the details by the end of this week,” Yakubu emphasized.
The INEC chairman reiterated the commission’s commitment to supporting political parties in conducting smooth and transparent electoral activities while managing resources efficiently.
