Doctors In FCT Call Off Strike

Doctors in Abuja, Nigeria, have begun a strike due to the non-payment of salaries for their colleagues employed in 2023.

The strike, which began on Wednesday, has resulted in the suspension of medical services across hospitals, with patients at Kubwa General Hospital being informed that no care would be provided.

This strike, which is a three-day warning, may escalate to an indefinite one if the government fails to address the doctors’ demands. The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the FCT minister on December 23, 2024, asking for immediate action. This ultimatum expired on January 6, 2025.

Dr. George Ebong, the president of the association, highlighted several demands, including the clearance of the Medical Residency Training Fund for 2024, the implementation of skipping for doctors employed in 2023, the payment of 2024 accoutrements allowance, and the settlement of 13 months’ worth of hazard allowance arrears.

A concerned woman, Ihiaka, who was with her daughter in a wheelchair, expressed her frustration, noting that she now had to seek treatment at a private hospital despite the high cost. She urged the FCT minister to prioritize the health and education sectors, similar to the focus on infrastructure. “If the citizens that are going to use the infrastructure have suffered negligence in the health sector, then truly the crucial purpose of the governance has been defeated,” she said.

Dr. Babagana Adam, the FCT permanent secretary for Health Services and Environmental Secretariat (HSES), has reportedly refused to comment on the situation.
