Jimoh Olumuyiwa on being Obasa removed

Hon. Olumuyiwa Jimoh, former Deputy Majority Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has weighed in on the ongoing political drama surrounding the removal of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Reflecting on the circumstances and the broader implications for the Assembly, Jimoh addressed the various claims made by Obasa and shed light on his own removal from office.

In an interview on Channels Television, Jimoh firmly dismissed Obasa’s claims that the process to remove him was flawed. “Obasa claims to be a lawyer, but I can’t give a case to him to litigate for me,” Jimoh said, challenging Obasa’s assertion that due process was not followed.

Jimoh emphasized that the Constitution allows the Speaker to be removed by a two-thirds majority vote from the Assembly members, stating, “What due process do you need to remove a Speaker? The due process is done by the majority of the honorable members.”

On Obasa’s argument that his removal occurred without him being present in the House, Jimoh remarked, “It doesn’t matter. The Constitution is clear about it. The Speaker can be removed by two-thirds majority without any condition. You don’t need to be there.” He further criticized Obasa, calling him “a pathological liar” for trying to portray the process as flawed, while pointing out that other Assembly members were also absent when significant decisions were made.

Jimoh also touched on his own removal as Deputy Speaker, which took place under Obasa’s leadership. He explained that his removal stemmed from his outspoken stance against certain policies he considered undemocratic and anti-progressive. “I was not happy that he removed me. But I took it with good faith,” Jimoh reflected. He went on to explain that his challenges to the Assembly’s policies and his unwillingness to conform to what he saw as anti-democratic practices were the key reasons for his ousting. “For some of us that grew up from the radical tradition in the student movement, we can’t keep quiet,” he stated.

Although Jimoh acknowledged his own contentious removal, he expressed satisfaction with the impeachment of Obasa. “I am happy because these are the issues that we have been raising for a long time. I’m happy that a Speaker has been removed, and the process has finally been followed.”

Jimoh’s insights offer a unique perspective on the complex dynamics within the Lagos State House of Assembly, as political tensions continue to mount and the battle for leadership remains at the forefront.
