Ikwechegh, Nigerian Lawmaker Who Makes People Disappear Reflects On Scandal
By Benjamin Abioye

Alex Ikwechegh, representing Aba North & South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, who ascended to public reckoning as the bashful lawmaker who makes people disappear has humorously referred to his October 2024 altercation with a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, as an aberration to his persona.
Alex Ikwechegh had referred to himself with the capacity to make the bolt driver disappear and with winning the appellation of the lawmaker who makes people disappear.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on January 28, 2025, Ikwechegh explained that he had moved on from the episode and now has a good relationship with Abuwatseya.
He shared that they are now friends, and he has even connected with the driver’s pastor and others in his community. “What happened was quite unfortunate, but I take it as an avenue for me to build a relationship with the young man. Today, we are friends,” he said. He also mentioned that the case was taken to court, but it was dismissed as the court found no merit.
Ikwechegh acknowledged that the video of the incident showed a low point for him, but emphasized that it didn’t represent who he is. He explained, “The video that everybody saw was a low moment. I felt the sanctity of my home was being desecrated. The part of the video people saw was just one part; they don’t know what happened before my reaction.”
He clarified that his actions were not typical of his public image. “People do not know what happened before that reaction. Like they say, actions pre-empt reactions. But whatever anybody has seen is not indicative of who I am,” he added. He also noted that his long public life had been free from scandals until that incident. Now, he says, he is known as “the man who makes things disappear,” but he is ready to move on.
The incident itself occurred in October when Ikwechegh was seen in a viral video angrily confronting Abuwatseya. In the video, he was shown slapping the driver and making threats, saying, “Can you imagine this rat? I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing will happen.” The confrontation stemmed from a disagreement after the driver, who was delivering snails ordered by the lawmaker, asked for payment. Ikwechegh accused the driver of disrespecting him by not stepping out of the car to deliver the goods, leading to the physical altercation.
The incident sparked outrage across Nigeria, with many calling for justice. Following the viral video, the police arrested Ikwechegh and arraigned him. He later apologized to both the Inspector General of Police and the driver, and the matter was settled out of court with a compensation agreement.
