Neymar Ends Contract With Al-Hilal

Brazilian footballer Neymar has officially ended his 18-month stay in Saudi Arabia, as Al-Hilal announced the mutual termination of his contract.

The club expressed their gratitude for his contributions and wished him success in the future.

The 32-year-old, who previously played for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, made only seven appearances for Al-Hilal after joining in August 2023, despite earning a reported annual salary of around $104 million. His time at the club was marred by injuries. Just two months after his arrival, Neymar ruptured his cruciate ligament in his left knee during a World Cup qualifier in October 2023, sidelining him for nearly a year.

Neymar briefly returned in October and November but suffered a hamstring injury that has kept him off the pitch. He is now focused on preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Al-Hilal’s head coach, Jorge Jesus, recently acknowledged the challenges Neymar faced in maintaining his top-level performance. While Neymar has drawn interest from MLS teams, reports suggest that Santos, the club where he began his career, may bring him back to Brazil. A return to Santos would be a fitting end for Neymar, who is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 127 matches.

Neymar started his career at Santos, scoring 107 goals in 177 appearances before moving to Barcelona in 2013. At Barcelona, he thrived alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, winning the 2015 Champions League.

Neymar also helped Brazil win a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. His record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 for 220 million euros ($230 million) solidified his legacy. At PSG, Neymar won five Ligue 1 titles and reached the Champions League final in 2020.
