Gunmen Kidnap ABSIEC Chairman

The Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima, has reportedly been kidnapped from his home in Okigwe, Imo State.

Prof George Chima, chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC was reportedly kidnapped from his Okigwe, Imo State residence, News of the kidnap emerged on Friday.

Sources say that four armed men stormed Prof. Chima’s home while he was hosting lecturers from Abia State University, Uturu, and took him hostage. The kidnappers initially tried to escape with him in his vehicle, which was being washed by his driver at the time. However, their plan failed when the vehicle wouldn’t start. They then hijacked a passing vehicle loaded with logs and used it to flee with Prof. Chima.

When asked for comment, Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Abia State Command, said she would respond but had not done so by the time of this report.

In a separate incident, five people were killed by suspected herdsmen in Ajegunle-Powerline, within Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State. The attack, which targeted labourers working in the area, marks a rise in violence in the region.

A local farmer, Akin Olowolafe, confirmed the incident, saying it occurred around 3 PM on Tuesday. He expressed his concerns about the regular attacks by herdsmen and armed robbers, which have made life difficult for the community. Olowolafe called for urgent action from authorities to address the growing violence.

He also mentioned that many farmers have abandoned their fields due to safety concerns, with some even halting agricultural work because of the ongoing attacks. He described the herdsmen as a serious threat, alleging that the attackers frequently engage in violence, including murder and sexual assault against women working on the farms.
