Plateau Launches Campaign Against Schistosomiasis
By Marie-Therese Nanlong

The Plateau State Government has reiterated the commitment to improve public health through proactive and preventive interventions, and ensuring a healthier future for its citizens.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk disclosed this on Friday while launching the preventive drug administration campaign targeting Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia) in the Wase local government area of the State as part of activities marking World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day.
It was gathered that Kanam and Wase local government areas of the State are the high-burden areas for the disease and to curb its spread, the State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang approved the administration of preventive medication to pupils and students of Primary and Secondary schools aged between five to 15 years in Wase as Dr. Shurkuk, the Chief Medical Director of the Plateau State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Benjamin Garkuwa, and other stakeholders in the health sector monitored the exercise.
Dr. Shurkuk emphasized the State government’s commitment to fostering a healthy younger generation for a more productive future and assured the students and stakeholders that the Governor remains resolute in his vision for a healthier Plateau State, which is why “he has sponsored this initiative to provide free treatment to school children, shielding them from the disease and the resulting adverse effects of Schistosomiasis.”
