Authorities have confirmed that there are no survivors after the wreckage of a missing small plane carrying 10 people was discovered near Nome, Alaska.

The United States Coast Guard announced on Friday that the aircraft, which disappeared on Thursday afternoon, was located approximately 885 kilometers (550 miles) northwest of Anchorage. The plane, a privately operated Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, had been en route from Unalakleet to Nome when it lost contact.

Coast Guard spokesperson Mike Salerno revealed during a press conference that two personnel were able to approach the wreckage and spotted three bodies inside.

“Unfortunately, it does not appear to be a survivable crash,” Salerno stated.

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying he and his wife were “heartbroken.”

“Our prayers are with the families, friends, and communities mourning this tragedy,” Dunleavy wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “We are grateful to the search teams who worked tirelessly to locate the aircraft. I ask all Alaskans to keep those affected in their thoughts and prayers.”

Senator Lisa Murkowski also shared her condolences, highlighting the close-knit nature of Alaskan communities.

“Alaska is a big small town. When tragedy strikes, we’re never far removed from the Alaskans directly impacted. But that also means we come together as a community to grieve and heal,” Murkowski posted on X.

The crash marks the third major aviation tragedy in the U.S. in just over a week.

On January 28, a regional commercial jetliner collided midair with a U.S. Army helicopter near Washington, D.C., resulting in 67 fatalities. Two days later, a medical transport plane crashed into a crowded Philadelphia neighborhood, killing six passengers and one person on the ground.
