How To Reduce Excess Salt Intake

Published

salt intake

The World Health Organisation ( WHO), has recommended the limit of salt intake to about 5 grams per day. Excess consumption of salt can lead to a spike in blood pressure and heart disease. Here are five ways to reduce daily intake of salt.

Read the label

Some processed foods may not taste salty but have hidden sodium. For one to regulate the salt intake, you may not rely on taste but to properly check the label.

Depend on homemade snacks

Chips and noodles are the great culprits of sodium intake. Instead of relying on chips and noodles, you may need to have your home made roasted nuts without salt.

Apply spices in your food

Select spices or seasonings that do not list sodium on their labels. For instance, you can choose garlic powder over garlic salt as a measure of ensuring that your intake of salt is moderated.

Avoid added  sauces or seasonings

When buying frozen vegetables, choose those labeled fresh frozen which do not contain added seasoning or sauces.

Do your investigation before dining

You may need to visit the restaurant’s website which should list the sodium content of various dishes served there to guide your intake of salt in their dishes. Alternatively, when you’re at the restaurant and ready to order, you can request that the dish be served without salt.
