The sister of Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) lecturer who was allegedly assaulted by a student, has spoken out, offering a detailed account of the incident that has gone viral on various Nigeria news reports.

In a live session with media personality Daddy Freeze, she defended the UNIZIK lecturers’s character, describing him as a calm and humble man who was taken aback by the sudden escalation.

According to her, the lecturer called her immediately after the altercation to narrate the incident, as they share a close bond. However, she admitted that their family was shocked when they started receiving calls about the video going viral.

“My brother called me as soon as it happened because we are very close. He told me that what caught his attention was when he passed and heard the girl say, ‘Who does he even think he is, even if he’s a lecturer?’

He went back to see if she was his student and noticed she was making a video. He then asked her to delete it because he didn’t want his face in any recording, and that’s when things escalated.

Before he knew it, the girl was all over him, scratching and biting him on the arm, drawing blood. He was still in shock,” she explained.

The lecturer’s sister further expressed her disappointment over the public backlash against her brother, especially claims suggesting he might have had prior interactions with the student.

“My brother is the calmest, most humble person I know. He is someone who would say, ‘The Holy Spirit said I should let it go.’

So it’s very painful to come online and see people defending the girl, making baseless insinuations. His wife is a magistrate, for God’s sake,” she lamented.

The incident has continued to stir heated discussions on social media, with divided opinions on who was truly at fault. Meanwhile, UNIZIK has assured the public that a full-scale investigation is underway and that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken.
