Tinubu’s Choir Stunned As Lagos Lawmakers Reject Obasa, Go On Indefinite Leave
By Benjamin Abioye

Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly have expressed their support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda by passing a vote of confidence in her and with it rejecting a peace proposal advanced by President Bola Tinubu to restore peace to the house.
This decision came amid speculations that she might step down from her position in order to facilitate Tinubu’s peace plan. Among the elements of the peace plan is the temporary restoration of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker and with it, returning Lagos West into the power configuration in the state.
GWG.ng reports that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Meranda are from Lagos Central while Femi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor is from Lagos East with Lagos West having nothing despite having about half of the state’s population.
During the plenary session held at the Assembly complex on Monday, lawmaker representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, Oladipo Ajomale, moved the motion to affirm trust in Meranda. Gbolahan Ogunleye, representing Ikorodu Constituency 1, seconded the motion. Following this, the Majority Leader, Temitope Adewale, proposed an indefinite adjournment of the plenary, which all members approved.
The session took place under tight security, with several police vans stationed at the Assembly gate and security personnel positioned along roads leading to the complex.
An associate of President Tinubu lamented the move by the legislators describing it as an insult on the President who he said was instrumental to the political rise of those rebelling against him.
This development is linked to an ongoing leadership dispute between Meranda and the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed from office. Obasa, who was not present at the time of his removal, has insisted that he remains the rightful Speaker.
Dismissing the fraud allegations against him as “fictitious and unsubstantiated,” Obasa stated, “My status in the house? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it. I’m a Muslim and I believe in fate. But let’s do it the way it should be done.”
Obasa has taken legal action against the Assembly and Meranda, challenging his removal in the Lagos State High Court. He is asking the court to declare that his removal was unlawful since the Assembly was on break at the time.
