The management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has placed three lecturers on indefinite suspension for allegedly demanding money from students to change their grades.

The three ESUT lecturers were also accused of selling grades and altering results.

In addition, a student from the Medical Laboratory Science Department, ThankGod Chinonso Obi, has also been suspended. He was accused of helping the lecturers in their activities.

The decision was made after the ESUT College of Medicine’s Disciplinary Committee submitted a report to the university’s management. The lecturers affected are Dr. Ezugwu Samuel Ndubuisi from the Anatomy Department, Dr. Ugwuishi Emeka from the Physiology Department, and Dr. Nwafor Charles from the Physiology Department.

A statement from the school’s Public Relations Department confirmed that the suspension started on January 23, 2025. The matter will now be reviewed by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for further action.

According to some news reports from Nigeria, the lecturers allegedly worked with the student, who was a class representative, to collect money from students in exchange for better grades.

“He (the student) usually claimed his fellow students had either failed the lecturers’ exams or received poor grades.

“This usually got those involved worried to begin to look for money with which to pay the lecturers in exchange for grades. This is what has been going on there until complaints started pouring in,” an ESUT source of the lecturers actions that have further fueled news reports emanating from Nigeria on academic fraud.
