Longest-Kissing Couple

A married couple who once made headlines for setting the world record for the longest kiss has shared an unfortunate update about their relationship. Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat, the Thai couple who locked lips for an astonishing 58 hours and 35 minutes in 2013, have now gone their separate ways.

Speaking on the BBC Sounds podcast Witness History, Ekkachai confirmed their breakup but expressed pride in their achievement. “I am very proud. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said. “We spent a long time together, and I’m trying to remember the good memories and that we did this together.”

The couple first broke the record in 2011, lasting 46 hours and 24 minutes. At that time, they hadn’t planned to enter the contest, which was held just before Valentine’s Day. Laksana had been unwell for a long time, and Ekkachai wanted to take her on a trip for a change of scenery. However, the prospect of winning 50,000 Thai Baht (around £1,200 at the time) and a diamond ring convinced them to participate.

The event itself was far from easy. Contestants had to follow strict rules, including staying awake, keeping their lips touching at all times, and even maintaining the kiss during bathroom breaks. “There were a lot of people there, around 14 couples competing, with media all around us,” Ekkachai recalled. “I felt like I was going to faint, and some spectators handed me an inhaler to help me.”

Although the experience was difficult, the couple was determined to push forward. In 2011, the previous record was 32 hours and seven minutes. “A lot of people couldn’t bear it and collapsed,” Ekkachai said. As exhaustion set in, they developed a strategy—Laksana would hold water in her mouth and pass it to Ekkachai to keep hydrated.

Despite feeling overwhelmed, Laksana urged him to keep going. “My wife said, ‘We need to keep fighting,’ so I carried on,” he shared. In the end, they won the competition and claimed the prize. However, in 2012, they lost their record when Ekkachai fell ill and couldn’t compete. Determined to reclaim their title, they trained hard for the 2013 competition, where they ultimately set a new record.

After their 2013 win, Guinness World Records decided to cancel the longest kiss category, deeming it too risky. This means that, despite their separation, Ekkachai and Laksana still hold the world record to this day. “The happiness was overclouded with how tired I was. I just wanted to rest and drink,” Ekkachai admitted, reflecting on their victory.

Even now, he is often recognized in public and asked about the contest. While their relationship has ended, their achievement remains unmatched in the record books.
