Cement Prices Remain High In Nigeria Despite Govt Order
By Benjamin Abioye

As of February 28, 2025, the price of cement in Nigeria has been unstable, with significant fluctuations. The Federal Government has asked manufacturers to lower the cost of a 50kg bag of cement to ₦7,000.
During a meeting on February 26, 2025 with Nigeria cement industry stakeholders, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, stressed that the price should be reduced. He pointed out that the naira has stabilized and petrol prices have dropped, which should make cement more affordable.
The Minister warned cement manufacturers that they must bring down the price to ₦7,000 within one week across Nigeria, adding that otherwise, “I will have to report them to President Bola Tinubu.”
However, market surveys show that cement prices are still high across Nigeria. Dangote Cement is being sold for between ₦9,500 and ₦10,000 per 50kg bag, depending on the location. Similarly, BUA Cement is priced between ₦8,000 and ₦9,000 per bag. Other brands are also costly:
– Elephant Supaset Portland Limestone Cement – ₦10,000
– POP Cement – ₦9,500
The difference between the government’s proposed price and the actual market prices is due to supply shortages and foreign exchange challenges.
David Iweta, the national chairman of the Cement Producers’ Association of Nigeria (CEPAN), stated that with better cooperation between manufacturers and the government, prices could reduce in about 30 days.
Cement prices may also vary depending on location, retailer, and market conditions. Buyers are advised to check with local suppliers for the latest prices.
