A young Nigerian man has sparked outrage after recklessly destroying Naira notes. Many have condemned his actions, calling them wasteful and disrespectful of the national currency.
In a video circulating online, the man is seen taking Naira notes from his bag and flushing them down a toilet. He repeatedly drops the money into the water closet and flushes, showing no concern for its value. The footage has drawn sharp criticism from Nigerians on social media.
Many users expressed their disappointment. @Sundayjctrucks said, “Money comes and goes, but wisdom in handling it determines its lasting impact. There are people in need, and this is what he chooses to do?” Another user, @itsabefe, commented, “If money can buy everything, it definitely cannot buy sense.”
Some people demanded his arrest, citing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s law against Naira abuse. @UsulorIsraelM pointed out, “This is a crime. Section 21 of the CBN Act (2007) prohibits acts that damage or destroy the Naira.” Others tagged law enforcement agencies, urging them to take action. @Chief_Ajiji and @Balatic called on the EFCC and the Central Bank to intervene.
Meanwhile, others mocked the man’s behavior. @ill_nojie joked, “Na the plumber go gain am when he comes to unblock the toilet.” @richieandrew added, “If EFCC picks this one now, he will be looking for where to borrow money for bail.”
Some suggested that his reckless actions stem from having easy access to money. @sadiq_wush wrote, “They don’t know the value of money because they didn’t work for it.” @isleofskincare remarked, “If you truly work hard for money, every dime will be important to you. This is just arrogance and wastefulness.”
While the video has sparked widespread debate, it remains to be seen if authorities will take action against the young man for abusing the Naira.
