A Nigerian man, Temi Tope Samson, has alleged that police officers in Ogun State paid him N1m on the spot after an officer crashed his car during a controversial highway arrest.

Samson, who was traveling from Lagos to Ondo State, recounted that he was stopped at a checkpoint in Ogun and accused of failing to stop for their superior at an earlier checkpoint. He explained that he unknowingly passed the previous stop due to heavy morning fog.

Despite his explanation, the officers allegedly insisted he had violated traffic laws and demanded a fine of ₦500,000 or threatened to take him to their station. According to Samson, while one of the officers was driving his car en route to the station, the officer lost control and crashed the vehicle.

In a bid to resolve the situation, the officers allegedly negotiated a settlement and paid him ₦1 million on the spot for repairs. However, Samson claimed he was pressured into accepting the payment and later discovered upon reaching Ondo State that the accident had caused damage to his car’s engine.
