The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has made history with the appointment of Professor Kamoru Olayiwola Usman as its Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), marking the first time a person of Yoruba descent has held the position since the institution’s establishment.

The university in a statement emphasized its commitment to merit-based leadership and national unity. Speaking on the appointment, Professor Ujam, a senior official at UNN, highlighted the significance of the decision.

“The appointment of Professor Usman reflects our resolve to prioritize competence over sectional considerations. It is imperative that we sustain this culture of inclusivity and meritocracy to move the university forward,” he stated.

In a further move to strengthen diversity and academic excellence, the Acting Vice-Chancellor also appointed Dr. Mansur Adebowale Saddiq as Acting Director of the university’s Medical Centre. Both appointments have been widely welcomed by scholars and students, who see them as steps toward fostering national integration within the institution.

Professor Usman, who succeeds Professor Urama, holds a PhD in Mathematics Education and previously served as Provost of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo State, from 2015 to 2023. His extensive experience in academia and leadership is expected to bring significant contributions to UNN’s academic development.

The university’s Senate meeting, where the appointments were confirmed, was attended by key officials, including members of the governing council led by Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo.
