Woman Jumping Third Mainland Bridge

A deeply emotional and distressing incident occurred in Lagos when a woman attempted to take her own life by jumping into the Third Mainland Bridge River.

She plunged into the water with no one nearby to prevent her, but moments later, she was seen floating before a group of rescuers arrived in two canoes to pull her out.

The incident was captured in a video circulating across Nigerian news platforms, sparking widespread reactions on social media. While some users doubted the seriousness of her attempt, others expressed concern for her well-being.

Eric (@erikk_w) reacted with sarcasm, saying, “She sabi swim ooo.” Similarly, @Oluwaterri1 joked, “Nor be breaststroke I see say she dey do so? Issorite oh! I hope she’s okay?” Others questioned her intentions, including @LiterallyKJ_, who remarked, “I don’t mean to be insensitive, but every person I’ve seen jump into this ocean was never seen, but this woman is here floating. God is good.”

However, some users condemned the lack of empathy in these reactions. @Inferno0808 criticized the insensitivity, stating, “Twitter is not a real place. Someone tried to kill herself, and they are laughing and making fun of it. That’s why people actually succeed in killing themselves—because Nigerians have no compassion.”

Others highlighted the struggles many Nigerians face. @Grace_Emmah_ wrote, “This hardship is making people make terrible decisions,” while @dammygtnet urged, “No matter what, ending it all should be discouraged! May God help us all.”

Several users also called for preventive measures. @joseph_sorbari suggested, “A proper and thick iron barricade should be installed on this bridge to curb this. I pray God helps her fight whatever she is going through.” @fobecyril added, “I think it’s time there is a rescue boat stationed here. There is hope, please. It’s a difficult time, we all agree.”

Despite the mixed reactions, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the mental health crisis affecting many Nigerians. While the woman was saved, it highlights the need for greater awareness and support systems for those battling depression and suicidal thoughts.
