Concerns have risen as unregistered groups have led efforts to recall Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, raising questions about the legitimacy of the campaign.

Reports have revealed that the groups pushing to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate are not legally recognized entities.

A letter from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), dated March 27, 2025, confirmed that one of the leading groups in the recall process, Kogi Central Political Frontier, is not listed in the commission’s records.

The letter stated that the CAC does not register political organizations or pressure groups. It read: “Kindly be informed that the exact name ‘Kogi Central Political Frontier’ is not available on record as an entity registered with the commission. Further, be guided that the commission does not register political bodies or pressure groups.”

This revelation casts doubt on the legitimacy of the recall effort against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has faced strong political opposition since taking office. It also raises concerns about the credibility of those behind the campaign, as their legal status is now uncertain.

Meanwhile, in a letter dated March 26, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed that it had begun the recall process. The letter, signed by INEC Secretary Mrs. Rose Oriaran Anthony, was addressed to Senator Natasha and copied to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, along with other leaders of the National Assembly.

INEC’s statement clarified that the action was taken in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution. The letter read: “Pursuant to Section 69 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I write to notify you of the receipt of a petition from representatives of registered voters in your constituency seeking your recall from the Senate.

“This notification is in line with the provision of Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall, 2024.

“This letter is also copied to the presiding officer of the Senate and simultaneously published on the Commission’s website.”
