Nursing Students Remi Tinubu

The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, has decided to take disciplinary action against a student nurse accused of posting a song on TikTok that was critical of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

During an event at Asaba attended by Nursing and Midwifery students across the state, the students reportedly rejected a song introduced by the event’s Master of Ceremony (MC), which referred to the First Lady as the “mother of the nation.” The students disagreed, stating that she was only the MC’s mother and not theirs.

The First Lady had visited the institution to distribute 10,000 professional kits, including Crocs and scrubs, as part of her health initiative. However, following the event, a student, Osato Edobor, allegedly shared the controversial song online, prompting the school management to take action.

In a letter dated March 27 and signed by the school’s Provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, Edobor was accused of engaging in a “malicious act” by recording, singing, and posting an “unofficial response” to the song during the First Lady’s arrival.

The letter stated: “This is a punishable offence as enshrined in the Student Handbook under standardized disciplinary action for some punishable offences No 8, Page 21.

“You are therefore requested to explain in writing in triplicate copies within 24 hours of receipt of this letter why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for this act.”

The school’s decision has sparked reactions, with many debating whether disciplinary measures against the student are justified.
