Suspended Rivers Governor Fubara has dismissed Nwaeke’s claims of sponsoring oil pipeline attacks, calling them baseless and politically motivated.

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vehemently rejected allegations that he orchestrated attacks on oil pipelines, dismissing them as baseless fabrications.

The accusations, brought forth by former Head of Service George Nwaeke, cast Fubara as the architect of the turmoil gripping the oil-rich state.

These claims emerged in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers, a decision that also saw Fubara removed from office. In response, Fubara repudiated the allegations, insinuating that Nwaeke had either been coerced or enticed with financial incentives to propagate such claims.

Among Nwaeke’s assertions was that Fubara had convened clandestine meetings with militants to sabotage oil infrastructure and was complicit in the 2023 destruction of the state’s House of Assembly complex. Fubara, however, dismissed these accusations outright, branding them as “laughable” and “ludicrous.” He contended that Nwaeke was merely fulfilling obligations to those who had either pressured or compensated him to spread misinformation.

Further refuting allegations of political maneuvering, Fubara denied any involvement in purported meetings to bolster Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s rumored 2027 presidential aspirations. He questioned the plausibility of Nwaeke, in his capacity as Head of Service, gaining access to such high-level political deliberations. He further clarified that Governor Mohammed’s visit to Rivers was neither clandestine nor shrouded in secrecy, but rather a public engagement.

Concerning claims that he sanctioned attacks on vital oil infrastructure, Fubara reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to peace in Rivers, asserting that even in moments of provocation, he had consistently advocated for stability and dialogue.

Adding yet another layer to the unfolding saga, Nwaeke’s wife, Florence, cast doubts over the legitimacy of her husband’s allegations, hinting that he may not have spoken of his own volition but rather under duress.

Rivers State’s political landscape took a dramatic turn on March 18, when President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency triggered Fubara’s suspension, exacerbating tensions between him and former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The suspension has since ignited widespread debate, with legal experts contending that while the president possesses the authority to impose a state of emergency, the suspension of a governor remains a contentious legal matter. Legal analyst Titilope Anifowoshe underscored the need for stability in Rivers, given its pivotal role in Nigeria’s economic blueprint. She noted, “Given that Nigeria’s 2025 budget relies heavily on oil production, targeting 2.06 million barrels per day (bpd) to fund a N54.99 trillion budget. Rivers State is crucial to achieving these economic goals.”

Compounding the controversy, unverified reports suggested that security personnel linked to Nyesom Wike had raided Fubara’s private residence. However, investigations have since debunked these claims as misleading.

As Rivers continues to navigate this turbulent chapter, the nation watches with bated breath, anticipating the next move in this unfolding political drama.
