Video: Portable Shares Prison Experience, Says He Was Never Mad
By Benjamin Abioye

Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has shared his experience in police custody, using the time to address several misconceptions about him, particularly the claim that he is mentally unstable.
In an interview on the Echo Room, Portable spoke about his time in detention, explaining how he handled the harsh conditions and interactions with fellow inmates.
He recalled how, upon entering his cell, the leader of the group voluntarily stepped down to let him take charge. However, Portable refused, insisting that the cell was not his home. He also learned that the former leader had been accused of murder, but Portable allowed him to stay by his side, provided he did not harm him.
Portable went on to describe the tough conditions he faced in custody. He revealed that new detainees were often beaten, but he managed to avoid this treatment by blessing the other prisoners in his cell, which was Cell 4.
Despite this, he refused to join in any group prayers offered by his cellmates, explaining that their situations were too different for their prayers to be effective.
“Thank God I am a government child,” he said. “They said I am crazy, but when I got to the government, I told them I am not crazy.”
He continued by describing the prayers that his fellow inmates attempted to initiate, saying, “One said he had killed one person, another said he killed two people, and another said he killed three people. I haven’t killed anyone, so our prayers cannot work together. Pray on your own.” This remark highlighted his reluctance to associate with the criminal background of some of the other detainees.
Earlier, Portable had been detained and arraigned for allegedly conspiring and assaulting three officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. During his time in custody, he took the opportunity to correct the narrative about his mental health, asserting that he was not crazy despite claims to the contrary.
