CBN Clears Air On ‘New’ ₦5,000, ₦10,000 Banknotes
By Gideon Ayeni

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed claims that it has introduced new ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes, labeling the reports as false and misleading.
The clarification follows widespread misinformation suggesting that the apex bank had unveiled high-denomination notes to enhance cash transactions and reduce handling costs. Some reports even alleged that a supposed CBN Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., announced the rollout of the new notes, set for May 1, 2025.
However, the CBN has categorically debunked the claim, warning the public against spreading false information.
“This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng,” the bank stated.
The CBN urged Nigerians to rely only on official communication channels for accurate financial updates, stressing that any major policy decisions regarding the nation’s currency would be formally announced through appropriate government platforms.
