How Nigerian Boxer Died

The Ghanaian government has announced plans to launch an investigation into the shocking death of Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju, who collapsed in the ring during a professional fight in Accra.

The plan for an investigation follows the tragedy inside the boxing ring as Olanrewaju was competing against Ghanaian fighter Jon Mbanugu during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29.

The bout took a tragic turn in the third round when the Nigerian fighter suddenly collapsed. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In response to the incident, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, assured the public that a formal investigation would be launched to examine the circumstances surrounding Olanrewaju’s death. Speaking on Ghanaian radio station Sporty FM, Adams emphasized the need for a thorough and transparent investigation.

“It is only through an investigation that we can determine if all the necessary fight protocols were followed, including ringside safety measures and the presence of paramedics,” Adams stated. “We need to institute a committee to look into what happened, and I assure everyone that nothing will be covered up.”

The probe comes amid allegations of negligence by Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), who claimed that the fight did not adhere to proper boxing regulations.

Olanrewaju, a former West African and national light-heavyweight champion, had a professional record of 24 fights, securing 13 wins, eight losses, and three draws.
