The Police Service Commission has removed Betty Otimenyin from her role as Commissioner of Police in Edo State, following the tragic killings of 16 travelers in Uromi on March 27, 2025.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin from her position as Commissioner of Police for Edo State, following the tragic killings of 16 Hausa-Fulani travelers in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, on March 27, 2025. The dismissal is believed to be related to the incident. The PSC has appointed Monday Agbonika as her replacement.

Betty Otimenyin was appointed as the 49th Commissioner of Police in Edo State on January 16, 2025, after Peter Umoru Ozigi retired.

According to a statement from the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, Monday Agbonika, the new Commissioner of Police, previously served as the Commissioner of Police (Mounted Troop) and Force Equitation Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

During a posting interview with the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), Agbonika was given the task of addressing crime in the state and gaining public trust. He was specifically asked to handle the recent killings in Uromi and to work proactively with relevant stakeholders. The PSC leadership advised him, saying, “You have to sit up and also work to win the confidence of the people, consult relevant stakeholders, and always document every incident and action taken, ensuring those who should be informed are properly updated on your actions.”

Agbonika assured the PSC that he would follow the law and seek the support of the Inspector General of Police as needed.

A seasoned officer with 32 years of experience, Agbonika has served in various roles, including Commissioner of Police Communications (Operations), Deputy Commissioner of Interpol, and Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos. He has also held positions such as DCP Operations at the Ports Authority Police Command in Port Harcourt, DCP in the Department of Finance and Administration in Zone 16, Yenagoa, and Area Commander in several locations, including Ota, Ogun State, and Idimu, Lagos.
