FG Backs Peaceful Protests, Warns Against Violence
By Gideon Ayeni

The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the right of Nigerians—particularly the youth—to engage in peaceful protests, as long as such actions do not result in violence or damage to national infrastructure.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made this known on Monday in Abuja while addressing growing agitation among young Nigerians. He acknowledged that the concerns raised by the protesters are valid and deserving of attention.
According to Olawande, peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental part of any functioning democracy, and the government respects the right of citizens to make their voices heard.
“There’s freedom of expression,” he said. “Protests are normal in any society. But they must be peaceful and responsible. We won’t tolerate any destruction of national assets.”
The minister revealed that he personally relates to the frustrations being expressed by the youth, adding that if time had permitted, he would have joined the demonstrations himself.
However, he issued a caution against actions that could disrupt public order or cause harm to national facilities, such as blocking major roads or damaging infrastructure.
Olawande urged protesters to maintain calm and express themselves in a manner that promotes dialogue and solutions, not chaos.
He further assured the public that the Federal Government remains open to listening and engaging with citizens to address their concerns constructively.
