The Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, alongside the only Governor of the party, Dr. Alex Oti of Abia State, have jointly summoned a crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party.

According to Peter Obi’s spokesman, the meeting is scheduled to hold in Abuja on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

In a formal notice signed by both Obi and Oti, it was announced that the NEC meeting would be immediately followed by an interactive Town Hall Engagement with key party stakeholders. The notice stated that the venue for both meetings would be the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

GWG.ng reports that those invited to the meeting include high-profile members of the party including the Labour Party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, serving and former Senators, as well as Senatorial candidates from the 2023 elections.

Other invited participants are serving and former members of the House of Representatives, all LP candidates in the 2023 general elections, members of the National Caretaker Committee (NTC), former governorship candidates still loyal to the party, representatives of the NLC/TUC Political Commission, and all members of the dissolved National Working Committee (NWC) led by Julius Abure.

The meeting comes as a follow-up to the recent judgment of the Supreme Court, which brought an end to the leadership of the Julius Abure-led NWC.

GWG.ng further reports that the purpose of the NEC meeting is to discuss the way forward for the party and ensure unity among members.

According to the notice signed by Obi and Oti, the NEC and Town Hall Engagement would provide “a platform to engage with critical stakeholders of the party, review the current state of affairs in the party, and chart a new direction for unity, peace, and progress.”

The statement added: “All invited members are expected to attend as critical issues affecting the party will be discussed extensively.”

This move is seen as part of efforts by Peter Obi and Alex Oti to stabilize the party and bring together its key leaders and members after the recent leadership crisis.
