Rivers Crisis: Wike Mocks Ex-Governor Crying Like A Child
By Benjamin Abioye

Nyesom Wike has fired back at former Governor Ada George, accusing him of speaking like a child and blaming him for the political crisis and state of emergency in Rivers State.
A fresh war of words has broken out between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and former Rivers State Governor, Rufus Ada George, over the political crisis rocking Rivers State. Wike has strongly attacked Ada George, accusing him of behaving like a child in the way he speaks about the crisis.
Ada George had earlier blamed Wike for the unrest in Rivers State. He accused Wike of being behind the call for a state of emergency in the state, as well as the appointment of sole administrators across the 23 local government areas.
Reacting to these allegations, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described Ada George’s comments as shameful. He said it was sad that some elders in Rivers State, who kept quiet while Governor Siminalayi Fubara acted like a dictator, were now complaining like “children who lost their most priced toys.”
Olayinka wondered why Ada George, who supported Fubara when he refused to pay salaries and benefits to members of the State House of Assembly, is now blaming others for the crisis. He said people like Ada George lack the qualities of true elders.
He explained, “Unlike these people masquerading as ‘Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum’, genuine elders sit in position of neutrality when there are conflicts among younger ones so that they will enjoy credibility and respect while sitting on the high table to resolve the issues.”
Olayinka also accused Ada George of backing Fubara when he destroyed the Rivers State House of Assembly and operated the Assembly with only three members out of 32. He said, “When Fubara was orchestrating the burning and demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, supposed elders like Ada George were hailing him. They were telling him it was normal for three members to run a House of Assembly of 32 members, with 11 as quorum of one-third that can sit and 22 as two-third that can pass budgets.”
Olayinka reminded the public that when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened in the crisis and peace agreements were signed, Ada George still insulted the President. According to him, Ada George called the President’s move “executive rascality” and claimed it “contravened the doctrine and practice of separation of powers and unilaterally suspended the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Olayinka said Ada George and his group never advised Fubara to stop his arrogant behavior, even after the Supreme Court gave a clear judgment. Instead, they allowed him to keep making threats. He said, “True to his threats, Fubara gave instructions and Nigerians saw the outcome when oil pipelines started coming up in flames.”
Now that the situation has led to the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State, Olayinka said these elders were behaving like children who lost their toys. He said, “Now that Fubara’s lawlessness has resulted in the imposition of emergency rule, the same elders who failed to stand and act like real elders are sobbing like children whose most priced toys have been taken away. It is funny and unfortunate.”
Olayinka also accused them of monitoring Wike’s movements in the state. He said, “They have even turned themselves to monitoring spirits, monitoring when Wike comes to Rivers State and when he leaves as if it has now become illegal for a Minister to visit his home-state and associate freely with the people.”
Finally, he told Ada George and the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum to blame themselves for taking sides during the conflict instead of remaining neutral. He said, “The moment an elder takes side in a conflict between two children, such an elder has lost the rights to intervene and resolve the conflict.”
