Presidency Dismisses Viral Ambassadorial Nominee List
By Benjamin Abioye

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised the public to ignore a list of ambassadorial nominees that is circulating on social media. The Ministry described the list as false and misleading.
In a statement, the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, made it clear that the power to appoint ambassadors belongs only to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He explained that no official nominations have been made yet.
“Kindly disregard the frenzy about the ambassadorial list,” the statement said. “Be rest assured that, when it is ready, Mr. President will transmit the list of nominees to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation.”
The Ministry also promised Nigerians that they will receive accurate information through the proper channels when the official list of ambassadors is ready.
This statement comes after growing public interest in Nigeria’s diplomatic appointments. The attention increased after all Nigerian ambassadors were recalled in September 2023.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that the Federal Government has completed the screening process for ambassadorial nominees. There are 109 missions waiting for new appointments, which include 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates around the world.
Sources familiar with the process confirmed that all necessary security checks and background investigations have been done on the nominees. However, despite the vetting being completed, the official list has not yet been sent to the National Assembly. President Tinubu is expected to send the list for confirmation soon, but the delay has raised concerns from some officials and members of the public.
On April 2, President Tinubu traveled to Paris, France, for a two-week working visit. During this time, he is expected to review the performance of his administration so far, assess ongoing reforms, and plan for the second anniversary of his government.
Some people believe that this trip might be the reason for the delay in sending the ambassadorial list.
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the visit was for “appraising key milestones” and pushing forward the reform agenda of the administration.
Several officials have confirmed that the vetting of ambassadorial nominees is complete, but there is no fixed date yet for when the list will be officially submitted to the National Assembly. One of the officials, who preferred to remain anonymous, explained that although the security checks are done, the President needs more time before releasing the list.
